The SAL85F28 is the first full-frame compatible lens in the “Easy Choice” lens series, adding fresh appeal to a lineup that entry-level users already find attractive for the compact, lightweight, reasonably priced models it includes. The 85mm focal length is a standard for portraiture, because of the natural perspective it provides. On an APS-C sensor camera the SAL85F28 functions as a 127.5mm telephoto lens. In fact, it features a Sonnar type optical design that is considered ideal for mid-range telephoto lenses. Weighing only 175 grams, it is significantly lighter than lenses of the same focal length from other manufacturers, meaning that step-up users can carry it along with their initial kit lenses without feeling burdened by extra weight.

Autofocus signals received from the camera body control a motor built into the lens. The internal motor directly drives the focusing group for smooth autofocus operation.
